Spring Has Sprung!

Spring Has Sprung!

As spring arrives, it's time to reassess our skincare routine and ensure we’re taking the right precautions to protect our skin during the warmer months as we head into summer. What worked for us in winter may not provide sufficient support as humidity rises and our skin is exposed to nature’s elements.

During the cooler months, our skin requires nourishment and protection from heaters, icy weather, and strong winds. However, in warmer months, we need to find the right balance between hydration and protection. With more time spent outdoors, we are exposed to allergens that can dry out and irritate the skin. The hot days and long nights mean we may wear makeup for extended periods while socializing, resulting in less sleep and increased dehydration due to rising body temperatures and even alcohol consumption.

Additionally, we face greater exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and air conditioning, all of which can strip moisture from our skin.

So, how can we find that balance without throwing our skin into chaos?

First and foremost, maintaining skin hydration is essential. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day and replenish electrolytes, especially after being outdoors in the heat or sun. Minimize alcohol consumption, as it can dehydrate the skin and may contribute to increased congestion and acne due to its sugar content.

Now that we’ve covered internal hydration, you shouldn't need to make drastic changes to your skincare routine. Your cleanser should still serve you well; however, if you’ve been double cleansing with a balm or oil, consider switching to a gel, milk, or cream cleanser to keep your skin feeling lighter.

Opt for antioxidant-rich creams and serums that provide hydration, such as those containing Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, and Niacinamide. These ingredients will help hydrate and protect the skin from environmental elements and free radical damage. Incorporating Vitamin A, Peptides, Glycolic Acid, and Salicylic Acid can help manage excess sebum production and prevent congestion.

If you regularly use a night cream, consider switching to a lightweight night gel or a night mask. These options can replace moisture and protect your skin while you rest, promoting rejuvenation.

Adding a hydration mist can also be beneficial, especially when you’re out in the heat. It helps replenish hydration lost from swimming and humidity while reducing moisture loss when going in and out of air conditioning.

For those experiencing increased oil production, blotting papers are a great option to remove excess oil and sweat without clogging pores with additional makeup.

And, as always, SPF is essential for protecting your skin from sun damage. You might consider switching to a tinted sunscreen or BB cream with SPF during the warmer months for lighter coverage. This can help reduce the number of products you apply, allowing your skin more breathability throughout the day.

Embrace the beauty of spring with a refreshed skincare routine that nurtures and protects your skin throughout the season!
